Points for NY Traffic Convictions

The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) keeps track of NY driving records with a point system.  Many traffic violations and all speeding ticket convictions have points associated with them. Points mean fees, revocation, suspension, and can cause increases in your insurance premiums. Our goal is to protect your record from points by a securing a dismissal or negotiating a plea bargain to a reduced charge with less or no points. Depending on your driving record and the circumstances of your case, reductions to no-point, non-moving violations are often possible.

Penalties for Points on Your NY Driving License

Your insurance company may also increase your premiums or drop your coverage for traffic convictions. In addition you may be subject to fines or suspension from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Driver Responsibility Assessments

For drivers who accumulate 6 points within any 18 month period, the DMV will charge $100 per year for three years and an additional $25 per year for each point over 6. For example, if you pleaded guilty to a speeding ticket for going 42 in a 30 mph zone,  you will have acquired 4 points against your license. Another conviction for traveling 86mph on the New York Thruway would result in another 6 points for 10 points total. After the second ticket, the DMV would notify you that you owe a Driver Responsibility Assessment of $600 payable $200 per year for three years. Learn more about Driver Responsibility Assessments.

*One more speeding ticket conviction within that 18-month period will cause the DMV to suspend your license.

License Suspension

For Drivers who accumulate 11 points in any 18-month period,  the DMV will suspend your driving license.  You may request a hearing only to show that some else committed the violations. You may not request a hearing to show that you were not guilty of the violations or to request a waiver of the suspension.

Great lawyer and great team

I unfortunately got 2 tickets at 2 different counties in the upper NY state after my flight was cancelled due to snow storm in the Winter. Ralph and his team helped me out with reduced charges and fines after a few months. Ralph is an expert on traffic tickets. He answered my questions and proposed the defense strategies in the phone. His team even worked in the holiday to evaluate my cases. They followed up at every stages professionally and responded to my questions promptly. According to my personal experience, I highly recommend Ralph if you have any traffic tickets in the NY state.

Take it from a Fellow Attorney, Seth Azria is wonderful and gets the job done.

I am an attorney working in the lower Hudson Valley. I had an unfortunate brush with the law on my birthday of all days! which resulted in my receipt of a speeding ticket en-route to a wedding in Buffalo. I'd never had any other infractions on my record and this offense is certainly not an area in which I specialize. I was very upset and worried but immediately upon calling Mr. Azria all of my fears and concerns melted away. Mr. Azria was able to plead my ticket down to a minor violation with no points and a small fee to the Court. Mr. Azria was quick, efficient and responsive. I never had a moment of worry that my case was being neglected. Mr. Azria and his team answered any questions that I had and kept me informed throughout the process. I could not have asked for a better team in my corner and you can't beat the price. You would have thought that I spent a small fortune for the quality of service that I received. Take it from me, Mr. Azria is the attorney you want representing you.
